Early Schools in Concord Township

Concord Township was founded in 1683 and the first mention of schooling began shortly thereafter. Come and learn how Garnet Valley Schools evolved from the first home schools over 3 centuries ago!

On November 2, Concord Township Historical Society will host a presentation at 7 pm at the Rachel Kohl Library on Smithbridge Road in Concord Township. The presentation explains how our earlier schools evolved into the award-winning school district we have today in Concord Township.

Ed Keane, a CTHS Board member, who did extensive research on how schools began here over 300 years ago, developed this presentation for the Society. He gathered old photographs to explain the factual and oral stories that are documented by the Society, as well as researched information available on the Internet.

Come hear what privileged children in the early years learned, and how Pennsylvania’s new law in 1838 required all children to have free schooling. Who started the free school movement in Concord Township before that law was passed? What was the name of an important Institute in the township that was one of the first to provide coed education at a boarding school? When were all the one-room schools consolidated?

Hear the answers to these and many questions on November 2. If you know the answers to our “Q&A Round” before we begin the presentation, you will win a prize!

Did you go to Concord School on Bethel Road before it became the Pennington School? If so, share your experience on our website under “Tell Your Story”, or come to the presentation and tell us about those early days.
