All Aboard!

The Concord Township Historical Society, in concert with the Rachel Kohl Library,

will present “All Aboard – when the railroad came to Concord”,

on Friday, March 23 at 7 pm., at the Rachel Kohl Library,

687 Smithbridge Road, Concord Township

All are welcome to this free program.

Concord Township Historical Society will give a presentation on how the railroads began in America in 1831, along with the history of local trains until the 1971 flood washed out the Octoraro line through this area. Through historic photos and narrative, railroad history will come alive. Was Casey Jones a real person? What does ‘highball’ mean? What famous artist was killed by a train near here? Where was the worst railroad wreck in history? Find the answers on March 23!

In keeping with this theme, the Rachael Kohl Library will present “Train Week” March 19th through 23rd at the library, with all story times having a train theme. The Library will have books and artifacts pertaining to American railroads on display until Friday the 23rd. In addition, raffle tickets will be on sale for tickets on the Wilmington and Western Railroad, a delightful excursion train, which operates regular steam- and diesel-powered tourist trains between Greenbank and Hockessin in Delaware throughout the year. Tickets are good for the “Easter Bunny Train”, a featured trip where the Easter Bunny hops aboard the train for a 1 ½ hour round trip ride to Ashland, and all kids get a special treat.

Also on Friday, March 23rd, the Historical Society will host a train display at the Library from 4 to 5 pm, with Lionel trains and N Gauge trains, along with a map of the area with local Railroad Station photos and artifacts.

Come and enjoy our local history through the eyes of “All Aboard”!
